Walkable Watershed Project, Oakland

The Walkable Watershed Project is rooted in the idea that natural flowing water can be a revitalizing force that connects urban neighborhoods and promotes healthy living. This project, which began in 2016, is centered along the Fruitvale corridor of Oakland, California—a heavily urbanized two-mile section of the Sausal Creek Watershed that stretches from I-580 to the creek’s mouth at the Fruitvale estuary. Being the first West Coast project of its kind to receive national funding, it promotes creek access and green infrastructure in the heart of the city.

Initiatives include:

  • new and improved creek access

  • designated safe walking and biking areas

  • additional trees on streets

  • native plant and rain gardens

  • residential rain barrels

  • park and trail improvements

  • creek-based urban artwork
